Reynolds ‘dying wondering’ after surprise podium

David Reynolds reckons he may have been able to chase down Chaz Mostert and Mark Winterbottom in the closing stages of yesterday’s Phillip Island race, had he not been over conservative with tyre use.

Looking to avoid the tyre dramas that dominated headlines across the Phillip Island weekend, Reynolds was urged by the Erebus team to be conservative across the monster final stint during yesterday’s race.

While getting to the end ensured a shock podium finish for the minnow squad, Reynolds wasn’t satisfied with third place. Having not had a single tyre failure across the whole weekend, the outspoken driver was disappointed that he didn’t push on and try and chase down former teammates Chaz Mostert and Mark Winterbottom.

“We didn’t blow a tyre all weekend, we never had a drama,” said Reynolds.

“[The engineers] were trying to conserve me for the last 14 laps, but I thought my car would have been fine.

“I wish I had pushed on to try and catch the rest of them. I tried in the last little lap and yeah, didn’t have a drama.

“I didn’t blow one all weekend so I wished I had pushed on – I am dying wondering what could have been.”

The Erebus squad is enjoying an upswing in form at the moment, highlighted by new signing Dale Wood finishing eighth on Sunday along with Reynolds’s third place.

While pointing out that experienced engineer Alistair McVean has helped the team find direction, Reynolds warned that the team still has a long way to go before it can be considered a genuine contender.

“We have been working really, really hard, since Al joined,” added Reynolds.

“Actually, since we started the team at the start of last year we have had a massive learning curve, and it has just gone from strength to strength.

“We are still not there yet, we still have a lot of thing we need to improve and areas we can improve on. We built some bits for this weekend, they arrived on Thursday night to try and improve the car but we built them up midnight Thursday, fitted them to the car – and they didn’t fit, so we will have to wait till next round to try them.

“It is a forever evolving game. We are revisiting ideas that we threw out at the start of last year, it is forever evolving.”
