Frijns, 24, won successive titles in Formula BMW Europe, Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 and Formula Renault 3.5 between 2010 and 2012 and was a reserve driver for Formula 1 teams Sauber and Caterham.

However, the perennially underfunded Dutchman never managed to graduate to F1 and spent much of the last two years on the sidelines.

For 2015, he ventured into sportscar racing with Audi and currently heads the Blancpain Sprint Series standings.

Despite that, Frijns kept pursuing a return to open-wheel racing and ran extensively in the pre-season Formula E Donington test with Andretti in August before finally getting a deal together.

"It is an honor to be part of the Andretti family and to drive for them in Formula E,” said Frijns. “It's a new championship and a completely new challenge for me.

"The way of driving and saving energy is going to be tough, but fun and I am really looking forward to the first race in Beijing in a few weeks time."

The Dutchman will partner Swiss driver Simona de Silvestro in an all-rookie line-up, with him set to make his Formula E debut in China and de Silvestro having only the two London races behind her belt.

"We’re very excited to have Robin join the team,” said team boss Michael Andretti. “He’s only done one test for us, but he did a really good job and he has a great attitude. We feel that with him and Simona [de Silvestro] we have a strong team put together and are ready for season two."

The Andretti squad has endured a difficult pre-season in Formula E, getting little mileage early on due to issues with their new technical package, but was on pace after reverting to the season-one powertrain.
