Consistent Razia nets another Podium finish
The GP2 Series’ Bahraini marathon ended today, with a fourth race in the space of just eight days at the Sakhir International Circuit. And as in the first three, Arden driver Luiz Razia was one of the star turns. From fifth on the grid, the Brazilian scythed through to third on the opening lap, passed Marcus Ericsson (iSport) soon afterwards and then tracked leader Tom Dillmann (Rapax) to the flag. Razia blended speed with caution to preserve tyre life, but was unable to unsettle the leader and finished less than two tenths of a second in arrears.
Team-mate Simon Trummer recovered from a sluggish start to run with the midfield pack, but was forced to retire when his front left tyre punctured with only two laps remaining.
Luiz Razia comments: “I was really pleased with my start, but once the race settled down I didn’t really feel I could keep pace with Tom Dillmann. I was able to maintain my position comfortably enough, though, and towards the end it looked as if Tom was starting to have trouble with his tyres. I did everything I could to pass him during the final three laps, but he responded and didn’t make any mistakes.
“Overall it has been a positive weekend. I could have done a little better in qualifying, which might have changed the complexion of the first race, but I finished second and fourth last weekend, then fourth and second this time. It’s vital that we maintain our run of strong point finishes and we’re still right in the thick of the title fight. Roll on Barcelona...”
Simon Trummer comments: “I’ve made some really good starts since graduating to GP2, but this wasn’t one of them. I got far too much wheelspin off the line, but I wasn’t the only one and didn’t suffer too badly. My pace was OK in the first part of the race, but then something happened at the front of the car. I couldn’t pinpoint the problem at first, but it became harder to brake and I was getting more and more understeer. I guess it was probably a slow puncture – that would explain why my front left tyre suddenly shredded with a couple of laps to go. A race to forget, then, but as ever I’ve learned lots of things that will help me during the months ahead.”
