The duo was separated by one and six tenths respectively in SS8 and SS9, both stages won by Jari-Matti Latvala, who retired from Day 1 with a broken suspension.

The Finn said: "I was very disappointed yesterday - I turned too early in a corner and hit the armco. I can be angry but that doesn't help. What can I do today? Some good times."

While Ogier beat Sordo by three seconds in SS10, he did most of the damage in El Montmell, closing the gap by 6.8s.

The duo's lead over Andres Mikkelsen has doubled during the loop, the Norwegian continuing to sit in third closely followed by Hyundai duo Thierry Neuville and Hayden Paddon.

Kris Meeke took sixth from Mads Ostberg despire suffering a puncture and losing half a minute in SS9.

The top nine was completed by two more Fords as Ott Tanak and Eric Camilli both took advantage of Craig Breen losing several minutes due to a broken driveshaft.
