Pomona, Calif. – A second-round finish today by Summit Racing driver Greg Anderson in the 48th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals here at Auto Club Raceway clinched the fifth spot in the 2012 NHRA Full Throttle Pro Stock standings.
Race-day traction issues continued to plague the four-time champion who had qualified third for this, the final race of the season.
“We were the first pair out (in the second round), the first pair out after the fuel cars (Top Fuel and Fuel Funny Car), which we’ve proven race after race is tricky,” he said about his quarterfinal loss on a foul to Mike Edwards.“We failed again and didn’t make it down the track, shaking the tires. On top of that, I red lighted. Either way, we were going to lose.
“I was amped up and I thought I saw the light – there was a lot of glare – and obviously I didn’t. I made a mistake.
Either way, we would have lost. I’m more disappointed we shook the tires again; there’s too much of that going on right now.”
For Anderson, who won four races in nine final-round appearances (en route to a 38-19 round record), considered the season a disappointment.
“We just made too many mistakes,” said the Summit Racing Chevrolet Camaro pilot. “We have to learn how to race again; unfortunately, the harder we tried, the worse we did.
Obviously, we have to sweep it under the rug, pick up our heads and learn how to do better because we’ve got the performance, at least with one of the cars (Summit teammate Jason Line finished second in the standings and qualified first for the last four races of the season, including setting track elapsed-time and speed records this weekend), we just need to get a wider tuning window so we don’t abort runs.”
