Plans for ‘motorsport mecca’ in regional Australia

The Mildura Rural City Council will stage a community information session next week, as it looks to garner public support to build a ‘major multi-use motorsport precinct’.

The regional centre, located in Victoria but right on the Murray River, which borders New South Wales, is hoping to build the new precinct near the existing Sunraysia Drag Racing Association venue.

Plans for the precinct include a three-kilometre circuit, a skid pan measuring 100m by 45m, pits and control tower, office facilities, and a camping site.

Speedway, motocross, karting, and jet-boat facilities are all part of the master plan as well.

According to the council website, ‘a concerted effort is underway to make Mildura the motorsport mecca of Australia’.

The website adds that the ‘council has developed a Business Case, Staged Development Plan and Investment Prospectus for the project, and is advocating for government and private investment to make the Mildura Motorsports and Community Precinct a reality’.

The project has already been given the tick of approval from the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport.

“It’s one of the most exciting projects in this country and is proudly supported by CAMS,” said the governing body’s CEO Eugene Arroca.

“The centre is ideally located between Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide and offers the very best in motorsport opportunities, including a bitumen track, skid pan and associated facilities for an integrated motor sport complex.

“It will be able to cater for a host of different motor sport disciplines and is located only 10 kilometres from the Mildura CBD.”

Mildura has turned out a number of well-known drivers, including Nissan team owners/drivers Todd and Rick Kelly, and Prodrive Racing Australia young gun Cam Waters.

The Mildura facility joins a number of new developments around Australia, including The Bend Motorsport Park in South Australia, which is poised to be added to the Supercars schedule for next season.

There has also recently been more funding allocated to a planned second circuit in Bathurst.
