NASCAR Cup Pocono II

NASCAR Pennsylvania 400 live

Live Text

Here's our report from the race - in case you had forgotten all that preceded the red flag (some of us sure have).

Like it or not, this is the kind of thing the Chase format has been made for - and it's certainly hard to begrudge the obviously talented Buescher this victory and the play-off ticket that might come along with it.

That's it for us today. So long and thanks for sticking with us.
Nice words from Brad Keselowski, who's been talking to Lee Spencer...
Keselowski, who won his first Cup race in his fifth career start, was happy for the rookie’s win. He understands what it means for an underfunded organization to win. Keselowski pulled off the feat with Phoenix Racing in 2009 at Talladega Superspeedway.
“I think it’s a great moment, not just for him but for his team,” Keselowski told motorsport.com. “He’s done a lot. I think he’s a pretty good driver that is inline to get an even better opportunity in his career.
“I’m proud of him. He’s done a great job. He’s doing exactly what he’s supposed to do — and that’s make the most out of every opportunity and graduate to the next one.”
Absolutely surreal outcome, that. Buescher has had only three top-20 finishes this season prior to Pocono.
Chris Buescher, reigning Xfinity series champion, gets his first Cup win - and in what circumstances.

The #34 is back into Victory Lane - and Buesche is now a very, very realistic contender to make it into the Chase for the Sprint Cup.
They've called it! Chris Buescher wins the 2016 Pennsylvania 400.
Here's the current order, numbers:
34 2 7 4 14 42 11 19 18 41
21 31 3 47 5 48 20 17 6 1
13 10 95 44 16 15 83 88 45 38
98 23 24 30 27 32 22 78 43 55
Thu-nder! Na na na na na. Thu-nder! There's no great way of visualising the lyrics to AC/DC's "Thunderstruck" in the written word, is there?
Numerous pictures/gifs on social media showing rain cells in close proximity to the track.

But they ain't on the track itself yet - and NASCAR seems reluctant to call it until some actual rain shows up.
NASCAR still holding out hope that the fog will pass.

But it sure doesn't look like it at the moment. The visibility looks as bad as it's been during this red flag.
Johnson on his early setback of a hole appearing in the nose of his Chevy: "It happened early, on lap two, I don't know where it came from. A huge rip in the kevlar. They patched it up, we got the balance back, but it's really slow on the straights. Maybe it's not getting air into the engine."
The teams are now being told to cover their cars and seek shelter, because there's lightning in the area.
Fog looked to be lifting a few minutes ago, but reports are now that it's getting thicker once more.
Logano: "The car was fast, real good on restarts. If it rained a bit earlier it woulda been a different outcome. The 24 just got loose under me and it kinda stinks. He just didn't slow down enough. We were making up for track position and were racing hard. We had a winning race car."
On the earlier battle between the #42 & #3: "That was entertaining, that was a gift for me!"
Buescher's unbiased weather view: "Track looks soaked to me. I can't see Turn 3. I don't know what's left to be decided at this point. We've been at Pocono long enough, let's go to the next one."
Interesting quote from Blaney on his points situation there: "I don't look at it. I don't care."

He was recently a genuine contender to make the play-offs on points, but a few shunts shuffled him down the order.

He's not quite out of the running, though - 28 points down on Larson.
11th-placed Ryan Blaney: "We took a gamble and it didn't work out for us. The car has been really fast, but you've got to make the most of it at restarts. We coulda run top 5 all day, if we had track position, but I think we have a shot of getting some more spots.
"It's been a crazy weekend. I wanna go racing, or it's boring."
If Buescher does win this race, it will have a huge implication on those drivers trying to qualify for The Chase on points. And if Allmendinger wins The Glen again...
Sounding for all the world like NASCAR's equivalent of Daniil Kvyat.
A downcast Chase Elliott on his clash with Logano: "I thought I slowed down enough but I just collected Joey, so I apologise to all the #22 guys. Just poor decisions. It's not working out right now. I just need to do a better job, and not put people in bad spots."
But, hey, it's Watkins Glen next weekend. It's never foggy there.
Buescher was 14th on merit at Indy last week, don't forget.
If this is the end result, it's about as bad of an outcome for Dale Earnhardt, Jr.'s Chase chances as they get.

He'd be 47 points adrift off the cut-off by Watkins Glen and facing a strong chance that Buescher will snatch one of the available play-off spots, too.

No news yet on when Dale Jr. will be back.
As Tom Jones would say, it's not unusual for a maiden race winner to prevail due to inclement weather: Ryan Newman, David Reutimann, Joey Logano and Aric Almirola have all done that.
Harvick: "Our Chevy has been really, really fast. One caution came at just the wrong time, and then here came the fog. Weird circumstances.
"We got our butt kicked last week by the 18, but the car's been really fast this weekend."
Buescher is now standing and steadfastly refusing to dance for the cameras. Good for him.
