Jolyon Palmer ends Spa-Francorchamps GP2 weekend on high
Southwater racer produces impressive race two drive at legendary F1 venue
Jolyon Palmer produced one of his best performances of his maiden GP2 season last weekend at Spa to end a frustrating weekend on a high.
The 20-year-old from Southwater had suffered mixed fortunes during the first half of the weekend at the world famous Belgium circuit but managed to turn things around during the 18-lap Sprint Race.
Starting from the back of the grid the Brit, who races for the Arden International team, showed tremendous pace and overtaking prowess to finish an encouraging 14th – making up an impressive eight places along the way. What’s more, Jolyon’s race pace was around half a second quicker than several of the front runners ahead of him.
Previously in the weekend, Jolyon had been forced to retire from the opening GP2 Feature Race after his engine ingested water causing him to lose power and grind to a halt. This compromised his grid position for the shorter Sprint Race.
Commenting on his weekend Jolyon said: "After the disappointment of race one, Sunday’s race went well. I started 20th and lost a place or two at the start but then I got my head down and made a number of passes. The car was really good and the tyres didn't go off at all and so my pace was good right until the end. It is a better end to what was a difficult weekend and hopefully we can improve again for Monza and finish the season on a high.”
Jolyon is next in action on 9-11 September at Italy's Monza circuit with full coverage available on Jolyon's official website and Facebook page.
