Berlin ePrix moves to new city centre layout

The German race, which is scheduled to take place on May 21, will use a 2.030km course featuring 11 turns (pictured above), situated primarily around Strausberger Platz and Karl-Marx Allee.

It remains subject to FIA homologation and the approval of Berlin city authorities.

Motorsport.com broke the news in November that Tempelhof Airport - which hosted last year's inaugural Berlin ePrix - would be unusable, owing to the facility being used to house refugees.

Several solutions were reportedly considered, including a possible move to the Norisring or Berlin's Olympiastadion, before a new bespoke street track in the capital was decided on.

The new track will also have a spectacular backdrop as it will run close to the Fernsehturm TV tower in Alexanderplatz, which has been a symbol of Berlin since the late 1960s.

“It is fantastic news that we have been able to find a new location to race in Berlin," said Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag.

"I want to thank everybody who has been involved in making this happen for all their hard work in such a short space of time.

"I am sure that this race will capture the imagination of the German fans and be a great success.”

Abt Audi Sport driver Daniel Abt added: “Formula E hasn’t only come up with a tremendous alternative location in Berlin but created a circuit with a lot of character. 

“The configuration looks interesting and, with its long straights and hairpin turns, seems to be promising a thrilling race as well.

"Now that the circuit has been announced, I’m even more excited about my home round.”
