Vettel qualified two tenths behind teammate Kimi Raikkonen at Spa on Saturday, and will start the race from fourth position.

Following his final Q3 run, Vettel told the team on his in-lap: "It's the last corner, I have zero rear and I'm not pushing on the way in, it's zero rear and all last corner.

"Lost it again. Broke the traction, no grip – easily one and a half tenths just on power."

"I was a bit upset"

In his post-session media interview he explained exactly what was the root cause of his anger.

"I didn't have as much grip as I was expecting," he said. "I thought I did a good job lining up the last corner and the exit, trying to be fairly straight and get good traction but when I came on the power I had a lot of wheelspin.

"I think everybody has been struggling, the tyres are getting hot – they are getting too hot and everyone seems to struggle more in the last chicane.

"I was a bit upset because I was expecting more and didn't get the benefit of taking off some speed beforehand to prepare for the exit."

Sharing struggle with Raikkonen

Vettel's teammate Raikkonen also complained that he lost time in exactly the same fashion.

"It looks like we both struggled with the last corner!" added Vettel. "Hopefully tomorrow we will be friends with that chicane.

"I think overall the car was good, we made a big step from yesterday and felt good through qualifying.

"I had a bit of a wobble on my last attempt so it wasn't great, not putting everything together, so in that regard Kimi had the upper hand in qualifying but it should be a good race we both start on the soft compound rather than the supersoft.

"I hope it is as close as it was today. It should be an exciting race."
