With all three of the German series' manufacturers dropping from eight to six cars for the new campaign, BMW has confirmed that two of its existing teams - Team MTEK and Team Schnitzer - will no longer take part in DTM from 2017 onwards.
Schnitzer will focus solely on GT racing next season, while MTEK will be tasked with preparing for BMW's 2018 entry in the GTE division of the FIA World Endurance Championship.
It means the six M4 DTM cars will be split across RMG, which ran 2016 champion Marco Wittmann and Timo Glock this season, and RBM, which ran Tom Blomqvist and Maxime Martin, in 2017.
“I am convinced that this is the best team structure to help us prepare for our new tasks,” said BMW motorsport boss Jens Marquardt.
“We have always been sure that we wanted to continue the successful cooperation with all our teams.
"We had to adjust our structures due to the changes in the DTM, and new possibilities and areas of operation opened up for us in our newly-reorganised motorsport programme.
"I would like to thank [Schnitzer boss] Charly Lamm, [MTEK boss] Ernest Knoors and their crews for their dedication throughout the past DTM seasons – and we can now look forward to competing together in many more races in the future.”
BMW will confirm its line-up of drivers for the 2017 season on 9 December, but with Martin Tomczyk and Antonio Felix da Costa not returning for next season, it leaves the way clear for the remaining six drivers to stay on board.
