Catalunya MotoGP - Race

Live Text

So that's it for us today - a beautiful race to see out a sombre, painful weekend.

It's almost back to square one in the MotoGP standings now, but there will be fallout from the events of today - most likely for Andrea Iannone.

Stay with us for post-race reaction.

Rossi: "I was in front for all the race, all the race I was pushing a lot, but I wasn't able to give enough gap to Marquez to escape.

"I was worried at the end, but when I saw him in front, I understood that I could [pass].

"It's a great victory, one of the best of my career."

Marquez: "Today was a really difficult race for me, with high temperature I struggle more - in the race I struggle a lot with the front, I have a few moments.

"In the race I try, but when I saw "Lorenzo down" on the pitboard and the mentality changed."
Pedrosa: "I choose the medium tyre cause I didn't have the perfect feeling with the hard. I tried to take the gamble.

"I don't know why Vinales was so aggressive, he made strange moves.

"The last six or seven laps the tyre was finished, but it was the right choice for me."
Sounds like Vinales had thought the race was over one lap in advance - that would explain a five-second loss in S1.

Didn't end up mattering in the end, but it would have if Lorenzo and Iannone were still in the race.
Marquez has stopped to change the digits of his bike number around. It was 93 and it's now 39. Beautiful gesture.
Rossi's win takes him to 103 points, to Lorenzo's 115 and Marquez's 125.
Pol Espargaro, a strong P5, has picked up a board that says "39" - the number of the late Luis Salom.
Chants of "Vale" ringing out at Catalunya after he's beaten the local rider.

If you need a sentence to describe Rossi's popularity and mass appeal, that would be it.
Finishing order:
1 Rossi
2 Marquez
3 Pedrosa
4 Vinales
5 P. Espargaro
6 Crutchlow
7 Dovizioso
8 Bautista
9 Petrucci
10 Barbera
11 Miller
12 Bradl
13 Laverty
14 Rabat
15 Pirro
16 Redding
17 Hernandez
Vinales has somehow managed to lose almost 20 seconds to Pedrosa, but it's good enough for fourth anyway, with Pol Espargaro in fifth.
Valentino Rossi wins the 2016 Catalan Grand Prix!
Fantastic last-corner exit from Marquez, a slipstream on the main straight and he just holds it under braking.
Rossi finds a couple of tenths in S2 and S3, but Marquez is back with him in S4.
This is absolutely glorious. With four laps to go, Marquez has had enough of following.
Marquez slipstreams past Rossi down the straight but can't hold under braking, Rossi keeps the spot.
Marquez into the lead, briefly, before Rossi retakes the spot.
A replay from a different angle shows the Iannone - Lorenzo shunt was actually a lot worse than it originally looked.

Lorenzo was pitched into the air.
Marquez has closed in on Rossi, is now running a couple of tenths adrift.
Cause of Aleix Espargaro's retirement is apparently his tyre being completely worn down. He might not end up the only one with that issue,
Running order:
1 Rossi
2 Marquez
3 Pedrosa
4 Vinales
5 P. Espargaro
6 Crutchlow
7 Dovizioso
8 Petrucci
9 Barbera
10 Bautista
11 Miller
12 Redding
13 Bradl
14 Rabat
15 Laverty
16 Pirro
17 Hernandez (re-joined)
Well, Marquez is not settling for P2 and an easy championship lead. He's continuing to hound Rossi.
Aleix Espargaro and Yonny Hernandez are in the pits.
The incident involving Iannone and Lorenzo will be investigated after the race.

Only one party to blame - Iannone actually stoppied before hitting Lorenzo - but what the punishment will be is anyone's guess.
Replays show Marquez nearly falling off his bike in the chicane. But he's held on.
Iannone is trying to apologise, but Lorenzo is not interested in talking.

But, hey, he's not limping anymore.
It was a late, desperate, kind of insane lunge from Iannone. Boom.
