IndyCar names Gappens, Helmling & Stoops to hear New Hampshire results dispute
A panel of senior motorsports officials will hear the IndyCar cases of Newman/Haas Racing and Ganassi Racing in the disputed results of Sunday’s Indy 225 at New Hampshire International Speedway.
Brian Barnhart, President of Competition and Operations for the IndyCar Series, on Tuesday named Jerry Gappens, Rollie Helmling and Jeff Stoops to serve as a three-person board to evaluate whether drivers Oriol Servia and Scott Dixon were unfairly re-ordered as runner-up and third place finishers after a controversial red-flag ending to the event.
The hearing will take place August 23 in Indianapolis. The proceedings will be closed to the public and media.
Andretti Autosports, the winning team, will represent its driver Ryan Hunter-Reay at the gathering.
Gappens is the Executive Vice President and General Manager of New Hampshire Motor Speedway and has a background in media and public relations. Helmling is a former president of the United States Auto Club (USAC) and team owner. Stoops serves now as Chairman of the Board for USAC and is a former car owner. He currently maintains an interest as a sponsor of an IndyCar team.
