Kaiser's average over four laps is 227.372mph, Alonso's was 227.353mph
Kaiser is in, Alonso is not
And Kaiser is still ahead after his third lap.
At this rate Kaiser is in and Alonso ain't
Kaiser's first laps are 227.720, 227.570 - McLaren are biting their nails
The only man who can stop Alonso now is 2017 Indy Lights champion Kyle Kaiser in the Juncos Racing-Chevrolet.
Indy Lights champion O'Ward has not made the 500; Alonso may still do so.
His second lap was almost identical to Alonso's, though...
Now O'Ward is dropping into 226s...
O'Ward's second lap is another 227.267, his average so far is a tenth of an mph behind Alonso.
O'Ward's first lap is 0.4mph slower than Alonso's.
Lap 1 is 227.325 and it looked a tad spooky.
Carlin at least has one car in the field - Charlie Kimball - but has lost one, Max Chilton's.
Now Patricio O'Ward is on track. Time to see if Red Bull has given him wings. And how trimmed out they are.
Karam's four laps are two-tenths quicker than Hinch's.
Karam is into the 500, Chilton is out, Alonso on the bubble
If he keeps this up, Alonso will be on the bubble until the session is over.
Lap 3 is steady, 227.499mph.
And Karam turns a first lap of 228.501 but then has understeer on Lap 2 and drops to 227.764
Karam's first lap is over 0.7mph faster than Alonso! Yikes.
If he beats Max Chilton's speed, Karam will ensure Hinchcliffe is on the grid for the 103rd Indy 500
Just what the doctor ordered. It means Fernando has a good shot at making the field, but there are no guarantees – it depends what the next three guys do!
Sage Karam in Dreyer & Reinbold Racing-Chevrolet looked very strong this morning's foreshortened practice and he's on track now.
Drop-off just 0.5mph across 4 laps.
His combined time is just 0.1s down on Hinchcliffe.
Lap 4 is 227.221 - average of 227.353. That is excellent. Just 0.5mph dropoff across the four laps.
That's just 0.3mph down on Hinch. Over 1mph on Chilton.
Lap 3 is 227.137. This is looking damn good in fact
Much faster than Chilton and 0.5mph down on Hinch.
Lap 2 is 227.278.
0.7mph faster than Chilton though.
Just a little short of Hinch, but what will the fall-off be?
Lap 1 is a 227.777
And it shows he's confident.
But it is faster than Chilton's!
That means everything and nothing
His warm-up lap is a 220.257
Hinchcliffe signs off with "now we sit and wait. I know how hard it is to miss this race."
Alonso is on a relatively untried setup - using Andretti Autosport setup and dampers.
Quote
Hinchcliffe: "Time will tell. At the end of the day, the work they did to get the car back on track and we put in a lot of time overnight. I can't thank the team enough. The run was consistent."
