That glowing Menards car goes P1 with a 230.119 opening lap but can he keep the tires under him?
But SPag qualified second here last year and he's smooth and brave at IMS
It's an Ed Carpenter Racing 1-2, and the wind is getting up too – which isn't great for laptime...
Now Simon Pagenaud heads out but the track is warming, as the sun peeks out from behind the dirty clouds in the area
Not sure anyone expected Newgarden to struggle like that.
An improvement on his fourth lap sees Newgarden stop the slide, and he is currently fifth - ahead of Rossi.
And his second lap sees his average drop beneath Bourdais'.
He's not going to do it with that - 228.703mph on Lap 1.
Newgarden's best start in the Indy 500 was second in 2016, with Ed Carpenter Racing. Now he's trying to beat them.
The first of three Penske-Chevrolets in this session hits the track. It's 2017 IndyCar Series champion Josef Newgarden.
Herta takes 3rd, top Honda, average of 229.086mph, more than 0.4mph faster than Sebastien Bourdais but 0.8mph off Carpenter
Now Colton Herta of Harding Steinbrenner Racing has the chance to at least be the fastest Honda, although it's doubtful that HPD has the hp to beat the best Chevrolets
Nice and consistent but Jones' 229.646 is 0.2mph short of his boss's speed.
229.486 for Lap 3 so his average is around 0.15mph beneath Carpenter's
Jones delivers a 230.196 for his opening lap, a tad slower than Carpenter's opener.
Now it's time for one of his employees - Ed Jones, 2016 Indy Lights champion, and third place Indy 500 finisher in 2017
Carpenter takes provisional pole with an average of 229.889mph. Will that be enough? Will it need to be enough?
That said, he just lapped in 230.372 for his opening effort
Carpenter is hugely brave but this week he's generally seemed to have the slowest of his team's three cars.
Should rain strike, IndyCar will delete these times and the order will be as it ended yesterday with Spencer Pigot on pole
Here comes three-time Indy 500 polesitter Ed Carpenter under darkening skies
But his second is 228.320 and his average drops below Bourdais'
Perhaps surprisingly he's the only Andretti Autosport driver in the Fast Nine. His first lap is a 228.849
Having seen how he carves through traffic at IMS in last year's race, we know he'll be brave here.
Alexander Rossi, who won this race as a rookie, is our second pole contender.
The Dale Coyne Racing with Vasser-Sullivan driver was looking very consistent, if not a pole contender. His average is 228.621mph.
Sebastien Bourdais now on track to start his bid for pole.
Kaiser genuinely cannot believe it - "Most emotional 48 hours of my life"
Juncos Racing will start its third straight Indianapolis 500.
