Exclusive: Dragon Racing to become Formula E manufacturer
Dragon Racing will become a manufacturer operation in its own right for Season 3 of the FIA Formula E championship, Motorsport.com can reveal.
The US team, which currently runs with a technology provided by Venturi, will be announced as a fully-fledged manufacturer for the start of the 2016/17 season on Tuesday.
Motorsport.com has learnt that engineering leadership for the new Dragon Racing assembled powertrain will come from former Venturi Technical Director, Nicolas Mauduit. The Frenchman has been a key figure in Venturi’s Formula E history but left the Monaco-based squad in October.
Details on other technical partners for the project are unknown at this stage.
Venturi and Dragon have had a close relationship throughout their respective Formula E programmes. This was formalised at the end of Season 1, when Venturi agreed to supply its motor package to Dragon Racing.
Originally, the Jay Penske-fronted team was going to stick with the Season 1 Spark/McLaren package, but eventually made the switch to become the only ‘customer’ of a Season 2 manufacturer.
Another two manufacturers are also set to be officially announced on Tuesday. One is Jaguar Land Rover, which Motorsport.com revealed to be chasing a Formula E entry in July, while the other is believed to be a company called Charge R&D Ltd, which is set to be the autonomous technology provider for the autonomous Roborace initiative, which was announced last month.
Charge, based in the UK close to the Renault F1 facility, received significant financial support from specialist technology investment and equity company Kinetik this year. Kinetik is owned by Denis Sverdlov, who personally unveiled the Roborace plans in London last month.
All three of the newly-approved Formula E manufacturer companies – Jaguar, Dragon and Charge – are expected to be confirmed by the FIA on Tuesday.
