Ferrari plans review to help Leclerc's Q3 form

Ferrari plans to undertake an in-depth review of its recent qualifying performances in a bid to try to help Charles Leclerc lift his form in Q3.

Charles Leclerc, Ferrari

Leclerc has admitted that one of the key areas he needs to improve is in extracting the best from himself in the final shoot-out for grid positions, and especially to stop making the mistakes that are proving so costly in the fight for pole.

Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto said Ferrari was aware that it was an area of concern, which is why he wanted the team to look in detail at what can be done better.

“It is part down to his experience but certainly we can help him by going through simply what happened in the last qualifying sessions,” said Binotto about Leclerc’s qualifying weakness.

“[It is about] understanding, in terms of normal track development and how you may manage the car in terms of optimisations between Q1, Q2 and Q3. It is looking back at the data, looking back at what he did, looking back at what we did, and maybe comparing as well to Sebastian [Vettel] what you may learn.”

Leclerc thinks it is small details – like not adapting well to changing weather conditions – that is making all the difference in his Q3 efforts.

“I need to be more asking about the weather conditions,” said the Monegasque driver. “The wind with these cars is very very powerful.

“It changed a little bit during a qualifying in Canada, but it’s not the main issue. I think the main issue is that I just need to put everything together in my lap driving wise.

“So it’s about trying to have maybe a bit more of a predictable setup and to have also a setup that is perfect for Q3 and not for Q1. So trying to anticipate a little bit the evolution of the track will be key.”
