F1 Monaco GP Live Commentary and Updates – Race

Minute-by-minute updates for the 2024 Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix.

Marshals wave the yellow flags on the opening lap as Lando Norris, McLaren MCL38, George Russell, Mercedes F1 W15, Max Verstappen, Red Bull Racing RB20

Max Verstappen's streak of F1 pole positions ended at eight as Charles Leclerc secured his position at the front of the grid for his some grand prix on the Monaco streets.

Oscar Piastri, Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris completed a Ferrari-McLaren lockout of the front two rows with George Russell fifth, ahead of Red Bull driver Verstappen. Both Haas drivers were disqualified from qualifying for a rear wing irregularity and will start from back.

The Monaco GP starts at 2:00pm BST (3:00pm local time).

Ocon is on hards, Ricciardo is on mediums, then comes Stroll, Alonso, Sargeant, Perez and Bottas all on hards, then Zhou and Hulkenberg on mediums and finally Magnussen is on hards.
Starting tyre: It's an even split between mediums and hards. Leclerc, Piastri, Sainz and Norris are all on mediums, then Russell, Verstappen and Hamilton are on hards. Then comes Tsunoda, Albon and Gasly on mediums to round out the top 10.
The grid is cleared and the drivers settle into their cars. We're just about ready for the Monaco GP.

Small factoid for you pre-race courtesy of Sam Hall: On Saturday, drivers with #25 won in both F2 and F3. Today, drivers with #2 won in both F2 and F3. Is this Sargeant's lucky day in F1? We're in for one hell of a race if that happens!
Last year's race hinged on the mid-race rain downpour, but there's no chance of the same today, with a 0% risk of rain according to the weather reports. It is actually getting pretty hot, with track temperature climbing close to 50C.

National anthem time! The Carabineros de Prince of Monaco sing the anthem despite having instruments in their hands, which was weird. 5/10.

With the amount of celebs and stars on the grid you'd be forgiven for forgetting there is an F1 race due to start in 15 minutes. Imagine this on the Wembley pitch moments before the start of the FA Cup final.
Naturally the grid is filling up with celebrities, it is Monaco after all, including Kylian Mbappe who has just been grabbed for a quick word by Martin Brundle on Sky Sports - who gets his elbows out against the security staff!
All 20 drivers have made it to the grid without a drama (so Leclerc has got further than his 2021 Monaco GP), as Norris gets a handshake from FIA steward and former F1 driver Derek Warwick.
Just in case you missed it last night, there's been a grid shuffle towards the lower end because both Haas cars were thrown out of qualifying after both their ring wings failed the FIA inspections. They will start the race from the back row of the grid. Full story here.

The big question is can Leclerc, finally, break his home race curse? After securing his third Monaco GP pole yesterday, can he turn it into a win? Leclerc has never featured on the Monaco podium in any year or in any category in his career. It is long overdue.
Hello one and all! What a fine afternoon for a Monaco Grand Prix, don't you agree? The pitlane is open and the drivers are on their way to the grid.
