F1 Mexico GP Live Commentary and Updates - FP2

Minute-by-minute updates for FP2 for the 2024 Formula 1 Mexico Grand Prix

The Mexico Grand Prix hosts the second part of the Americas Formula 1 triple-header as the championship begins the run-up to its climax.

Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz earned Ferrari a 1-2 at the Circuit of the Americas last weekend but much of the focus was on the controversy behind as Max Verstappen inherited third from title rival Lando Norris - the McLaren driver penalised for overtaking off-track.

George Russell topped first practice at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez after a crash between Alex Albon and Oliver Bearman triggered red flags, but now weekend data gathering is pushed to one side as Pirelli conducts a tyre test. FP2 gets under way at 11pm BST.

"The brake pedal feels a little bit stiff," Perez reports over team radio.

Piastri sets the early pace of 1m19.030s, not that it really means a lot, but it is always good to keep a note of these things.

Verstappen, who had his FP1 cut short by an engine problem, hasn't taken to the track yet but all appears well with his Red Bull. Meanwhile at Williams, the repair work on Albon's car is still ongoing from his first practice session crash but the team expects him to be in action later in the session.

Here we go! Norris darts out of the track, using the C5 tyre we believe, for an out-lap.

Basically, this is a C4, C5 and C6 tyre test for both a quali and long stint simulation, compared against a baseline tyre that is already homologated for 2025. All the way to six, not quite This Is Spinal Tap, but we'll take it.

Right, how is this FP2 session tyre test going to work? We've got you covered. Here's all you need to know.

McLaren's right of review appeal over Norris's US GP penalty has been heard in between FP1 and FP2 but so far the outcome hasn't been announced. The general consensus is it won't be successful, but we'll see what comes up.

The opening practice session really was a thrill-a-minute, with two red flags, five rookies and numerous talking points. There was no further action taken by the stewards for Albon and Bearman in their clash, but FP1 runner Shwartzman picked up a five-place grid penalty for overtaking under yellow flags. Wonder when he'll ever get to serve that.

Hello once again, who is ready for an extended second practice super special? Pirelli wants teams to try out some of its 2025 rubber, but for those back in Europe hopefully it isn't too tiring...
