George Russell on Canada sprint pole: "It feels great after a tough Miami, but I never doubted myself, I knew what I could do. Miami was a bit unique. It's high grip here, it feels like you're driving a proper F1 car around here, which is how is should be.

"[The upgrades are] definitely feeling great, the team have done such a great job to bring this forward. We saw in Miami that McLaren are close and Ferrari are not too far behind, and on a track like this it's really excelling."

"Well done George, well done George," Toto Wolff says over the radio. "Thank you Toto, thank you Toto," comes the response.

Bit of a late rescue mission from McLaren there; neither driver got a good first lap in, but Norris and Piastri shoved their way past the two Ferraris.

Top 10 order in SQ3

1. Russell
2. Antonelli
3. Norris
4. Piastri
5. Hamilton
6. Leclerc
7. Verstappen
8. Hadjar
9. Lindblad
10. Sainz.

Top nine were all within 0.772s - so it was VERY close out there.

Norris gets over his iffy first lap and hurls his McLaren to second ahead of Hamilton!

Russell then tries to put an extra lock on pole, doing a 1m12.965s - and he's joined on the front row by Antonelli, who was just 0.068s off.

Hamilton's having another go - and he's quickest in the first sector. Is there enough tyre life left?

He improves, but it's only enough to stay second.  Verstappen likewise, improves but remains fourth.

Norris is only fourth having lost it at Turn 2, behind the Red Bulls - and Lindblad to boot.

Russell posts a 1m13.194s, with Antonelli only up to third! It might be Russell's here.

Hamilton's on another try, although his first sector has been eclipsed by Hadjar this time.

It's a 1m13.411s for Hamilton, and Hadjar with a 1m13.605s. Verstappen splits them.

Hamilton's backed out of that lap as he looked like he was trying to drive a shopping trolley through Tesco on a Saturday morning there.

Russell's double-prepping on his softs, and most will likely follow suit.

Hamilton, Hadjar, and Sainz are on-track first. Soft tyres for this session, so full pelt here.

Russell joins them on track, looking for another sprint pole.

SQ3 begins

So, here's the fight for sprint pole: which Mercedes will get it? Does Hamilton have something up his sleeve?

I mean, we'll find out in a few minutes, so yeah.

Verstappen was displeased with his car, hence his lowly placing in that session - he looks really uncomfortable over the bumps here.

Meanwhile, Bearman apologises for a "messy" run in SQ2; neither Haas and neither Audi makes it through to SQ3, with both Alpines out at this point too.

Eliminated in SQ2

11. Hulkenberg
12. Bortoleto
13. Colapinto
14. Ocon
15. Bearman
16. Alonso

Colapinto can't go any higher than 12th, and Ocon can't go higher than 14th. Bearman is only 15th, so Verstappen is safe.

Sainz then slides in at the last second to displace Hulkenberg, booking his place into SQ3!

Bortoleto puts in another effort, and digs two tenths out of Sainz to go 10th.

Verstappen's pitted, but he should be okay - Hulkenberg moves up to 10th at Bortoleto's expense!

Verstappen goes up to ninth, but only ninth - 0.9s off Russell's effort.

Hamilton goes quickest by 0.001s, with Leclerc up to fourth - but Russell's going quickly once more. It's a 1m13.026s, so that's a pretty decisive advantage.

Verstappen's gone a bit later, and has double-prepped so he should be clear to go now. He lost that prep lap to track limits, but that's irrelevant really.

Sainz improves to go ninth, with Bortoleto moving to 10th to displace Ocon.

Elimination zone for SQ2 after first laps

11. Bearman
12. Colapinto
13. Bortoleto
14. Hulkenberg
15. Verstappen
16. Alonso

Leclerc goes up to fifth, displacing Lindblad from the top quarter of the field - the Racing Bulls driver is having a good day thus far.

Piastri then goes up to fourth.

Norris kicks off with a 1m13.957s, but Hamilton goes 0.3s faster.

Russell then sets a 1m13.466s, with Antonelli on a 1m13.551s. So, it's Russell, Antonelli, and Hamilton thus far...

Double prep for Russell, as he's still trying to get some temperature into his tyres.

Meanwhile, Red Bull is playing the waiting game with Verstappen - brave, in a 10-minute session.

SQ2 begins!

And we're back after that short interlude. Russell and Antonelli are out first, followed by Colapinto, Bearman, and Ocon.

Five drivers will fall - who will it be?

SQ2 will begin in like, two minutes - and Alonso is already guaranteed to be out.

Hamilton might not be the most popular driver after that, as he was slow out of the pits and arguably cost a couple of drivers the time to set a final lap.

Eliminated in SQ1

17. Perez
18. Stroll
19. Gasly
20. Bottas
-. Albon
-. Lawson

So it's all a bit pointless for everyone except Stroll at this point - and he's not improving, so this was a waste of time.

Well played everyone. That's 1:46 of my life that I'm not getting back...

...oh, I'd only waste it anyway.

Sainz makes it, Stroll makes it, and Hamilton JUST scrapes it (why he's gone out, nobody knows). Nobody else can get a time in.

"It's going to be very tight," Hulkenberg says.

Indeed, the order is Sainz, Stroll, Hamilton, Bearman, Ocon, Hulkenberg, Bortoleto, Bottas, Gasly, Perez, and Colapinto.

We begin again - there's no way Colapinto and Perez are getting times in.

We will indeed resume in three minutes' time. Sainz is first in the queue, followed by Stroll, Hamilton, and then a Haas.

We also have the two Alpines and both Audis in the queue, with a Cadillac.

It's going to be touch and go - can all of these drivers get an outlap done within the 1:46 time?

The delay in action is because the barrier is indeed being fixed, so I'm glad they're listening!

Estimated time of resumption in about five minutes, but that's not confirmed.

Alonso "too much on the limit"

"I locked up the fronts and after that, you're a passenger - there is no room to avoid anything here in Canada," Alonso told Sky.

"Too much on the limit. We are a little bit behind and we don't have the pace. We were P14, so pushing seven or eight places more than what we should have."

The Aston Martin is now gone, but it looks like that barrier needs replacing. But what am I, a steward?

With mechanics holding their hands up in the pitlane, it appears they think we'll be going again...

Alonso's gone in head-first at Turn 3 after a lock-up. He's 14th as it stands, but won't be taking part in SQ2 if the session isn't restarted.

With 1:46 left on the clock, it's doubtful...maybe there's enough time.

Colapinto immediately escapes the drop zone and goes 10th fastest for now.

Hamilton's finding some momentum, and gathers a 1m13.889s to go a little bit quicker than his previous best.

...and it's a red flag, Alonso has crashed out.

Elimination zone with three minutes to go

17. Gasly
18. Perez
19. Bottas
20. Colapinto
-. Albon
-. Lawson

Hamilton has another tilt and posts a 1m13.922s, so he's top for now. Russell looked like he was on a swift one, but locks up at the Turn 13-14 chicane.

Norris moves up to third after a tow from Sainz.

Verstappen does a purple first sector, but the second isn't great. It's P3 for him, which is pretty good overall.

Piastri posts a 1m14.8s to go third, which becomes fourth as Antonelli pitches up with a 1m14.010s.

This lad's a bit quick, isn't he?

Leclerc posts a 1m15.006s to go top for now...but not for long, as Russell sets a 1m14.772s.

Norris is a tenth behind Russell, which is a lot better than this morning.

Verstappen's looking quick, however, and posts a 1m14.476s.
