Larson tops second practice at NHMS over Blaney and Truex
Kyle Larson topped the speed chart in single-lap runs during second practice at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Saturday morning.
Larson completed 31 laps in the No. 42 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevy with a fast lap of 132.586mph.
“I thought our car in race trim was really good,” said Larson, who rolls off second on Sunday in the ISM Connect 300. “We unloaded exactly how we race. We know we will be in the ballpark we just have to fine tune it a little bit, probably.”
Ryan Blaney, Martin Truex Jr., Matt Kenseth, Denny Hamlin, Daniel Suarez, Erik Jones, polesitter Kyle Busch, Kasey Kahne and Jamie McMurray rounded out the top 10. Jimmie Johnson ran 11th followed by Brad Keselowski, Kevin Harvick, Clint Bowyer and Joey Logano.
Kahne led the second practice session in the first five minutes with a speed of 130.986mph. Erik Jones (132.008mph) topped the chart at the seven-minute mark after his first run. Ryan Blaney followed to second (131.925mph).
After the first 10 minutes, Jones held tight in first followed by Blaney, Kenseth (131.902mph), Johnson (131.760mph), Larson, Truex, Harvick, Boywer Kurt Busch and Jamie McMurray. Eleven minutes in, Larson bumped Jones with a lap of 132.186mph. Keselowski joined the top 10 by the 12-minute mark. His lap of 131.697mph was fast enough for eighth — the same speed as Harvick.
Larson, Jones, Kyle Busch (131.961mph), Blaney, Kenseth, Johnson, Truex, Keselowski, Harvick and Clint Bowyer completed the top 10 after the first 15-minutes. Joey Logano (131.519mph) was 11th, followed by Kurt Busch, McMurray, Hamlin, Ryan Newman, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kahne and Suarez.
Suarez climbed up to 3rd at the 20-minute mark, then bumped Jones for second on his 16th lap (132.044mph). Kyle Busch, Blaney, Kenseth, Johnson, Truex, Keselowski and Harvick rounded out the top 10. Just before the 24-minute mark, Kenseth vaulted to second-quick on his ninth lap (132.163mph).
Blaney bumped Larson for P1 with a lap of 132. 517mph on his 13th lap with Truex in tow (132.462mph) as 25-minutes expired in second practice. Larson regained the top spot on his 11th lap (132. 586mph) followed by Blaney, Truex, Kenseth, Hamlin, Suarez, Jones, Kyle Busch, Johnson and Keselowski.
Thirty minutes in, Larson remained P1 followed by Blaney — and six Toyotas — Truex, Kenseth, Hamlin, Suarez, Jones and Kyle Busch. Johnson ran ninth followed by Keselowski, Harvick, Bowyer, Joey Logano, McMurray, Kurt Busch, Kahne, Elliott, Newman, Earnhardt and AJ Allmendinger.
With 15-minutes remaining in the 55-minute session, Larson’s lap was still fastest and he had completed 24 laps. The only change in the top 10 was Kahne bumping Johnson for ninth (131.815mph). Austin Dillon and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. were the only drivers outside of the top 20 single laps speeds. Dillon’s best lap was 130.927mph (22nd). Stenhouse followed with a lap of 130.546mph (23rd).
In the final 10 minutes, McMurray moved up to 10th (131.770mph), Johnson dropped to 11th followed by Keselowski, Harvick, Bowyer and Logano. Kurt Busch, Elliott, Newman, Earnhardt and Allmendinger completed to the top 20 single-lap speeds.
Not surprisingly, Logano led the most laps (56) in the second — and his final practice session. He was 15th quick with a lap of 131.519mph. Logano didn’t clear inspection in time to qualify on Friday and will forfeit all 50-minutes of Happy Hour practice after failing inspection four times.
Truex led the Best 10 Consecutive Lap Average category with a speed of 131.396mph followed by Johnson, Blaney, Kyle Busch, McMurray, Harvick, Logano, Suarez, Kenseth, Earnhardt, Elliott, Kurt Busch, Bowyer, Baney and Newman.
