Michelin will take medium wet tyres to Silverstone

Jorge Lorenzo, Andrea Dovizioso and his Ducati teammate Andrea Iannone, among others, saw how the front tyres could not withstand the overheating caused by an asphalt that dried up as the laps went by.

As a result, the rubber got detached from the carcass to a greater or lesser extent, which led to strong criticism from the riders.

Michelin understands why they are unhappy, but at the same time it points out that it was them who decided to use the softest front compound, based on three reasons that Piero Taramasso explained to Motorsport.com.

"Because in warm-up it had worked well, because it's not a good idea to race with a compound that has not been tested before, and because the majority thought the asphalt would dry up and that race would be a flag-to-flag," said the Italian.

"But during warm-up there was a lot more water on the track, and during the race it didn't dry up quick enough to make the slick worth using.

"At the same time, during the final laps the braking points were nearly all dry, and that made the front tyres start to suffer."

Dovizioso, who lost all the central tread of his tyre, said that the main problem was that the two rain tyre choices that French manufacturer offered were too far from each other in terms of stiffness, and he called for an intermediate version.

Taramasso confirmed this option exists, that it was tested at Sachsenring, and that it will be taken to Silverstone, where the next round of the championship will take place in two weeks.

"As we expect it to be colder there, we still don't know if we'll take only the soft and the medium, or all three of them. But for sure we are taking the medium one," concluded Taramasso.
