If you were frustrated by Fernando Alonso’s Honda engine failure in the closing stages of this year’s Indy 500, spare a thought for Parnelli Jones and Andy Granatelli: 50 years ago they made history at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway by easily leading with a revolutionary
four-wheel-drive turbine car. With three laps to run, however, and with the checkered flag unfurled, the STP Paxton Turbine cruised silently to a halt.
