Rolex 24 at Daytona gets underway

The 56th running of the Rolex 24 at Daytona is underway, marking the start of the 2018 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season.

Start: #10 Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillac DPi, P: Renger van der Zande, Jordan Taylor, Ryan Hunter-Reay leads

Poleman Renger van der Zande held the lead in the #10 Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillac DPi-V.R as the field entered Turn 1 for the first time, fending off Helio Castroneves in the #7 Acura ARX-05.

Felipe Nasr gained four positions on the opening lap in the #31 Action Express Cadillac to grab third, ahead of the sister #5 machine of Filipe Albuquerque and Tristan Vautier in the Spirit of Daytona car.

Fernando Alonso, starting 13th in the #23 United Autosports Ligier JS P217, moved up two positions on the first lap.

There was early drama for the #55 Mazda DPi, which initially failed to get away from its marks, but Jonathan Bomarito eventually got going and the car took its starting position.

In the GT Le Mans category, Joey Hand grabbed the lead for Chip Ganassi Ford Racing ahead of teammate Richard Westbrook, as the pole-sitting #3 Corvette of Jan Magnussen dropped to third.

The #82 Risi Ferrari of Miguel Molina took the early advantage in GT Daytona while the #58 Wright Motorsports Porsche had to head to the garage after sustaining front-left damage on the pace laps.
