Czaczyk dominates US F4’s first weekend
Konrad Czaczyk won all three races on the US Formula 4 Championship’s first weekend, held at Mid-Ohio, to take a commanding lead in the points table.
JDX racer Darren Keane’s fastest lap in Saturday’s race earned him pole for the second race, with Leading Edge Grand Prix’s Czaczyk alongside. Primus Racing’s Kyle Kirkwood and a second JDX car of Cameron Das occupied the second row.
The double-yellow flags were out before the end of the opening lap as Baltazar Lequizamon crashed and needed retrieval. After the safety car intervention, Czaczyk passed Keane for the lead at Turn 2, and led the remainder of the race.
Kirkwood, too, would pass Keane for second, although the JDX driver did hold on to reach the podium and complete a 3-4 for JDX, ahead of Das.
Czaczyk had also set himself up perfectly by setting fastest lap in the second race and thus earning pole for Race 3. That made the victory almost a formality, as he left fellow front-row starter Kirkwood behind.
With four minutes left in the 30-minute session, Austin Kaszuba lost a front wheel and in an unrelated incident, his GMV Motorsports teammate, Michael Goodyear also went off, requiring a full course caution.
With no time left for a restart, Kirkwood’s third victory was ensured, ahead of Kirkwood and Raphael Forcier of Group-A Racing.
After a perfect weekend, Czaczyk commented: “We had a rough start to the weekend after placing fifth during qualifications Friday. “The weekend quickly improved by winning the entire race weekend, sitting on the pole and successfully completing my first standing start.
“This is my first time competing in a car, and my team and I couldn’t have asked for a better start of the season.”
“The cars are amazing, and they were so responsive and fun to drive,” Czaczyk continued. “I’ve never driven anything like them. Some people weren’t sure what to expect coming into the weekend with a new series and a new car, but everything was great.”
