Sainz "perfectly fine" after practice accident
Carlos Sainz is "perfectly fine" and feels no pain following his dramatic accident during final practice for the Russian Grand Prix.
The Toro Rosso driver crashed heavily against the barriers after losing control of his car on the approach to Turn 13.
It took marshals nearly 20 minutes to extricate Sainz from his car, which ended up underneath the barriers.
He was then airlifted to a nearby hospital for checks.
His manager Borja Ortiz said after the crash that all was good with the Spanish driver.
"Carlos is perfectly fine. He's undergoing tests and everything is okay. Nothing hurts. Thanks for the messages," Ortiz wrote on Twitter.
His father Carlos Sainz Sr tweeted: "Just talked to Carlos, thanks to God he is ok. More tests going on but much happier now. Thanks to everyone for the support."
The Spanish driver will miss today's qualifying session and it is still unclear if he will be able to race tomorrow.
Investigation ongoing
Toro Rosso said in a statement that it was still investigating the cause of the accident.
"Following Carlos Sainz's accident during FP3 today in Sochi, the driver is perfectly conscious and was able to talk to the extrication team. Once out of the car he was taken to the circuit Medical Centre, where he underwent an initial assessment of his condition," said the statement.
"He has now been taken by air ambulance to the Sochi Hospital 4.
"Investigations on the reasons for the accident will take place once the car is back in the team's garage.
"Further information will be released by the team and the FIA to the media when it is available."
