McLaren Production Centre wins construction award

The McLaren Production Centre, situated alongside the McLaren Technology Centre Formula One base in Woking, has received the Judges Special Award at the 25th anniversary of the British Construction Awards, held in London this week.

The MPC, which is the base of McLaren Automotive, houses the manufacturing and design processes of the groups high-performance cars, such as the MP4-12C, and has been rewarded with the accolade as it is regarded to be a civil engineering project that is particularly inspirational.

Opened in November 2011 at a cost of £800million by the British Prime Minster David Cameron, the site is large enough to hold 2569 Formula One cars and required the removal of 180,000m3, which was later re-used in landscaping the development, negating 25,000 lorry loads of removal.

As with the McLaren Technology Centre, which recently received an award for being carbon neutral, the MPC maintains a focus on becoming a self sufficient project through the use of high-performance cladding and situating itself largely underground.

“Attention to detail was everything on this project,” says project manager Adrian Brooks. “In the McLaren methodology you do it once and do it properly. Completing any building on time and on budget is extremely satisfying, even more so when it is as sophisticated and ambitious as the McLaren Production Centre. I’m very pleased and proud that this commitment to excellence has been recognised by the judges of the British Construction Industry Awards, and that they found the MPC as inspiring as we do.”
