Magnussen says Renault engine upgrade "impressive"

Magnussen and Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo will be the two drivers who will get the upgraded power unit which has received substantial praise since it was tested in Barcelona last week.

While Magnussen says he cannot quantify the improvement in terms of time gained, the Dane admits the stronger driveability will be a big help around Monte Carlo.

"I can't really quantify it. It's better," said Magnussen. "It depends on the track, really. It's a good improvement. Renault has done a really, really good job with this, especially considering it's during the season.

"To make a big step in the middle of the season is quite impressive.

"One of the concerns for Monaco was the driveability, and actually the driveability is better, so that's something that's going to help a lot around here.

Magnussen reckons the revised engine is the result of Renault deciding to change its development direction after struggling in 2014 and 2015.

"I think Renault, on the engine side, went in the wrong direction with the old power unit and they realised that and fixed it and went in the other direction and now we are seeing the gains from that.

"So it's not just about investment. It's also that but it's not only that. It's also a change of philosophy."

Red Bull speed hard to watch

While the improved engine is a positive for Renault, Magnussen says it now puts the onus on his team to improve the chassis, admitting seeing Red Bull running in front with the same power unit is frustrating.

"It's tough to watch, because it shows black and white that our car isn't fast enough," he said. "We just need to kick ourselves in the ass and get on with it.

"Everybody is working really hard and we are making very good gains and we are getting the right things done, so I have no worries. It's just frustrating to see at the moment.

"You have to be patient and look to the future, and I think our future is quite bright.

"It helps a lot. Having a good step in the engine is fantastic. It means we can just focus on improving the car and it shows everyone that we need to improve the car."
