Hamilton dominates inaugural Russian GP

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton managed to convert his pole position into race victory, as he took the chequered flag as the winner of the inaugural FIA Formula One 2014 Russian Grand Prix. The Englishman’s race win today also means that the Mercedes team have clinched the Constructors’ Championship for the first time. Also, Mercedes-powered cars went 1-2-3-4-5 in this race.

Rosberg's troubles

Hamilton’s team mate, Nico Rosberg trailed the 2008 World Champion and finished the race where he started in second place. The German driver locked up his tyres as the race got underway, which saw him go into the run off area of the track momentarily.

Rosberg was told via the team radio to give the place back to Hamilton as he initially took the lead, but Rosberg was forced to pit in any case as a result of flat spotting his tyres. After visiting the pits for a tyre change, Rosberg found himself towards the back of the field, but he managed to climb his way to the front and he completed 52 laps on the same tyres of the 53 lap marathon overall.

Bottas comes home P3

Williams’ driver, Valtteri Bottas maintained his qualifying position of third place throughout the race and despite not securing the ultimate prize of race victory; the Finnish driver did achieve the fastest lap of the first Formula One race at the Sochi circuit.

Championship

Lewis Hamilton has exteded his lead in the championship, holding a 17 point margin over Nico Rosberg.
