Hamilton and Button show support for Team GB

The Hungarian GP weekend may have prevented Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button from following the opening days of the 2012 Olympics too closely but the British pair ensured they were showing their support for the 541 athletes taking part in the London Games for Team GB by carrying a message of support on their race helmets.

Both drivers raced with ‘Go Team GB’ stickers on the top of their crash helmets over the weekend at the Hungaroring, with Hamilton also displaying a message in support of his father Anthony family's country, Grenada, which has 10 competitors in action at the Games.

Hamilton’s victory on Sunday came on the same day that Britain won its first two medals, silver in the women’s road cycling race and a bronze in the women’s 400m freestyle swimming, and the 27-year-old admitted it had been a poignant time to deliver for British sport.

“Yeah, it does feel extra special because obviously with the Olympic ceremony and the Olympics starting and obviously wishing all the teams the best, I can't wait to at least watch it on TV, but to be able to have it back in the UK I think is great for Great Britain,” Hamilton said.

“Yeah, I carried the flag on top of the helmet today. I hope that it was visible. I feel that I've done my part, even though we're not in the Olympics. I feel like I've done my little bit today, this weekend, as has the team for the Olympics.”

Formula 1 and the London Olympics have been linked in recent weeks following the emergence of a bid to turn the Olympic Stadium in Stratford into part of a F1 race track, which is one of four legacy options currently under consideration by the London Legacy Development Corporation and has received broad support from Bernie Ecclestone.
