Alonso says "free" point just an anecdote

Fernando Alonso says the "free" point he scored in the British Grand Prix is just an anecdote, as he wants his McLaren team to finish on "another level".

The Spanish driver scored his first point of the season at Silverstone after finishing in 10th place despite crashing into teammate Jenson Button at the start of the race.

Alonso was running in 11th place, but was one of the first drivers to switch to intermediate tyres when the rain hit the circuit.

He said the strategy got him a point that he had deserved more in previous races, but he admitted that 10th was not a result to write home about.

"I hope there are many more to come," said Alonso after the race. "One point is good for the team morale, and for those who are working night and day, or for the days when we deserved it more.

"Today we didn't deserve it that much because we were running 11th, but then with the rain we more or less got it for free."

He added: "I can't say that finishing 10th is finishing well. We want to be world champions and that takes a huge amount of work and discipline from here until next year. The team is very focused.

"There will be make updates in the upcoming races, although maybe we won't see them because we will be penalised and will start from the back.

"But the goal is to finish the year on another level and that being in the points is the normal thing and not news."

Teammate Button retired from the race after their first-lap accident, when Alonso spun to avoid the Lotus drivers and ended up hitting the Briton's car.
