It is also lovely to see some fans in the grandstands, of course it cannot be at full capacity due to current circumstances, but it definitely feels more normal.
Perfect conditions greet the drivers for FP2 with no chance of rain and air temperatures at a pleasant 22 degrees – while the track temperature is at a toasty 50 degrees.
But focusing on the here and now, Perez's top time from FP1 of 1m12.487s will be the early benchmark to beat this afternoon, along with keeping an eye on those all-important long run stints. It is going to be a busy one!
During the lunch break there's been more flexi-wing debate with plenty of F1 team bosses having their say. Here's the latest on the situation: https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/wolff-f1-risks-protests-with-half-baked-flexi-wing-tweak/6511932/
It is good news down at Ferrari for Leclerc who is ready to go for the afternoon session after getting just four laps in before his mechanical issue. He must be wishing it was the old practice day format of a 90-minute FP2, but instead he’s only got an hour to catch up.
Good afternoon! Who is ready for some more Monaco magic? We thought so.
And Perez's timesheet-topping lap closes out FP1.
Perez goes even faster at the death of the session, with a 1m12.487s.
A few track limits deletions, surprisingly enough. Unsurprisingly, it's because drivers have run off at the Nouvelle Chicane.
Sainz is up to second, with a 1m12.606s - fastest of the medium times.
Verstappen didn't like the downshifts on the engine settings he's using. "Just give me back what I had," he orders.
Perez now goes top, a 1m12.536s to elevate the Mexican above his Red Bull team-mate.
Nicholas Latifi has 33 laps - the most of anyone so far.
Very few improvements at this stage - just lap-grabbing as we're into the final stages of the session.
The Red Bulls now sweep to the top; Verstappen goes fastest with a 1m12.648s and Perez gets a 1m12.817s to go P2.
Gasly was on a quicker lap, but the final sector wasn't particularly special. He's still top, however.
Sainz had a bit of a moment with the barrier on the exit of Turn 16. He's come into the pits for checks.
But Gasly, on the softs, now goes top with a 1m12.929s.
Sainz gets back to the top of the times with a 1m12.965s, 0.03s clear of Hamilton.
The corners before the Rascasse are very difficult to get right if conditions get breezy. It's like Piscine in the wind.
Raikkonen went a little too deep into the first corner. His foot was a little too Devote-d to the accelerator there...
Mercedes, meanwhile, looks finely planted on the mediums and Hamilton goes top with a 1m12.995s. Bottas is P2, just a tenth or so behind.
I remember back in the day when I used to be hooked on EA's F1 Manager game, I could never get the set-up right for this track. So I'd just give up on it.
Verstappen's up to the top with a 1m13.191s on the hard tyre. Red Bull looking quite good.
And that's the VSC over. Alonso biffed his front wing against the wall at Anthony Noghes - so perhaps that was the root of the issue.
Hamilton gets within two hundredths of a second of Sainz's headline time, setting a 1m13.404s. 404 fastest time not found.
Bottas is the next person into the 1m13s, with a 1m13.732s.
Sainz continues to bring down the times with a 1m13.388s.
Lots of running already in this first 15 minutes - Russell and Alonso already up to 12 laps a piece.
Leclerc has a gearbox failure - and that's expected to be a session-ender.
Sainz proves that with a 1m13.639, a full second (plus one thousandth) faster than Hamilton in P2.
The fastest FP1 time in 2019 - the last time we were here - was a 1m12.106s from Hamilton. So there's more time out there as the track evolves.
