Formula E unveils Paris ePrix circuit layout
The circuit that will host the first ever street race in central Paris for a round of the FIA Formula E Championship has been unveiled.
The inaugural Paris ePrix, scheduled for 23 April, will take place around the historic Les Invalides area of the French capital, and will encompass 14 turns over 1.93km.
The track will race around the Musee de la Armee, one of Paris’ most recognisable buildings, which includes the Dome des Invalides. The Eiffel Tower will also be viewable from the circuit.
“As a series we are fortunate enough to race in some incredible locations but none more spectacular than the backdrop in the city of Paris,” commented CEO of Formula E, Alejandro Agag.
“The ethos of Formula E is urban racing in the heart of cities around the world - Paris certainly ticks all those boxes. France is also a key market for the championship as the home of the FIA, Official Founding Partner and Tyre Supplier Michelin, and team partners such as DS and Renault.
“The Paris ePrix will be an iconic setting for Formula E with DHL, the championship’s Official Logistics Partner, delivering the first fully-electric race to the French capital.”
The track is close to the FIA headquarters in the Place de la Concorde, and FIA President Jean Todt, who has been a vocal advocate of Formula E since its inception, said: “It is entirely logical that a country like France, that has always been at the cutting-edge of innovation, should host an ePrix in its capital city.
"I am sure that the spectacle offered by Formula E on a track laid out against the amazing backdrop of Les Invalides, will make this event truly unique among motorsport events at a world level.”
Judgement day for Berlin looms
The race following the Paris event is still scheduled to be the second Berlin ePrix, but the venue for the race is still yet to be decided and formalised Motorsport.com can reveal.
Several options have been pinpointed by the Formula E organisers, but it is believed that staying in Berlin is the preferred option.
Formula E, FIA and the ADAC are believed to have set a self-imposed deadline for this Friday to make a decision on where the race could take place. An announcement is expected at the end of the month.
The venue for the inaugural Berlin ePrix in 2015, the Tempelhof airport, is unavailable as it is currently housing refugees that have fled to Germany, mainly from war-torn Syria.
Motorsport.com understands that one of the potential venues could be around a major stadium in the city. The largest stadium is currently the Olympiastadion which hosted the 2006 World Cup Final and last season’s Champions League final.
Wherever the venue is, Germany is a vital market for Formula E, as the series’ partners DHL are based there, as well as the ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport team coming from Allgau in the south of the country.
