Seven-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton has used his time away from the race track to get behind the wheel of an insane car once again. This time, he explored grassroots American lowrider culture in a customised 1984 Buick Regal.

As he met the owner of the modified American car, Hamilton admitted that he had never seen a lowrider in person, having only followed the scene online and on television. The owner walked him through the Buick's two-tone candy paint and signature hydraulic suspension system.

When asked whether the community was more focused on aesthetics or competition, the owner explained: "It's a combination. It'll be a whole thing. It's like the best car, the best paint job." He later explained that it was for competition but also just part of the lifestyle.

Stepping inside the classic Buick, the Ferrari driver was given a quick tutorial on the switchbox. A simple press of a button plunged the chassis to the floor on one side of the car. "That's nuts," Hamilton laughed. "I've seen it on TV, but I've never... This is crazy."

After taking it for a spin around the streets of Los Angeles, the 41-year-old returned the car with a smile plastered across his face. "It was crazy, dude. Yeah, so much fun. Well, thank you so much for showing us and introducing me to the culture. We appreciate it."

Reflecting on the unique experience, Hamilton posted on Instagram: "I always want to learn more about different car cultures around the world and this one’s been on my list for a long time.

"Getting to drive a lowrider and spend time with the people that honour them and work to keep the culture alive was a sick experience. Shout out to the team on this."
