James Vowles sends clear Williams message after difficult start to 2026 F1 season

James Vowles has told Williams fans the team has used Formula 1’s unexpected April break to tackle its weak start to 2026

Williams Formula 1 team principal James Vowles has shared an up-front message to fans following a difficult start to the 2026 season for the Grove outfit.

In recent years, Williams has placed a large amount of its resources in development for the 2026 regulation changes as part of its long-term plan to return to its former championship-winning form. But after missing the private testing in Barcelona at the end of January, the team was already on the back foot heading into pre-season testing in Bahrain.

After the first three rounds of the season, Williams sits ninth in the constructors' standings with two points.

"The start of the season wasn’t what we wanted. One of the things it’s shown us is that how a team responds to challenges says more about them than how they handle the wins, podiums, and rise to the top," Vowles posted on LinkedIn.

"At Atlassian Williams F1 Team, we talk about accountability and resilience every day - if you walk through our factory or race bay, you’ll see them on the walls. This break is where those values have to show up in practice."

F1 has had an unexpected five-week break between the Japanese and Miami Grands Prix due to the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix. This time has been crucial for struggling teams, including Williams and Aston Martin, to regroup and reset before the season continues.

"Over the last few weeks, we’ve come together as a team to go through the data, accelerate research and simulation, and refine our approach for the rest of the season," Vowles continued.

"Our drivers are back in the simulator and the crew are working on pit stop practice. On the development side, we’re pushing hard on all elements, most importantly the weight of the car. Every hour of this period has a purpose.

"Miami is the opportunity to show our next step forward. We know we’re not going to be the finished article - but we’re looking forward to making progress, and getting back to the track."

The Miami Grand Prix will take place on 3 May.
