Team Vodafone Jamie Whincup again held onto the top position during the preliminary qualifying this afternoon at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, edging out Fabian Coulthard in the Lockwood Racing Commodore and Mark Winterbottom in the Orrcon Steel FPR Ford.
Garth Tander who hit the wall and brought out the red flag managed to grab 8th spot for the all important Top Ten Shoot Out tomorrow afternoon. Not knowing whether he would qualify he limped back to the pits and was told by his team that the red flag didn’t count during the endurance events.
Craig Lowndes finished in 5th behind Will Davison in the Trading Post FPR Ford. Shane Van Gisbergen, Tim Slade, Steve Owen and David Reynolds rounded out the top ten grid spots.
Jamie Whincup said that his car like the rest of the field suffered with tyre wear and that was to be expected with today’s heat. The surprise of the day was Fabian Coulthard who said that the Brad Jones Racing cars always perform at Bathurst and he has expectations of that continuing.
Showers are predicted to hit Bathurst tomorrow afternoon and if that eventuates any of the top ten drivers could grab the coveted pole position as we celebrate 50 years of the Great Race.
