Andretti to bring racing back to D.C.

As if running a Championship winning IndyCar team, promoting the Milwaukee round of the Verizon IndyCar Series and the inaugural Formula E Grand Prix of Miami wasn’t enough, Andretti Autosport is bringing racing back to the District of Columbia.

The inaugural Volkswagen Rallycross D.C. will be held on June 21 and 22, and with a new television package with NBC, it is slated to be aired live.

The event is being run by Andretti Autosport Marketing, an arm of the IndyCar race team, in conjunction with Volkswagen of America, and will be held at RFK Stadium.

The last auto race to be held in the U.S. capitol was a round of the 2002 American Le Mans Series, the Capital Grand Prix. Ironically, the event was hosted in the streets around RFK Stadium.

Red Bull Global Rallycross will feature the race as the third event on its calendar, on a track constructed on the festival grounds surrounding the stadium.

“We’re thrilled to hold a race with such an historic backdrop and to bring this extreme motorsports to the forward-thinking environment of D.C.,” said Tim Mayer, General Manager, Andretti Sports Marketing in a statement.

“In addition to putting on a spectacular show, the Volkswagen Rallycross DC event is committed to being a good neighbor and we look forward to some great initiatives we’ll have in support of the race with a focus toward giving back to the community.”

Andretti Sports Marketing’s CEO Michael Andretti said he is excited to be able to bring racing back to a vital part of the racing community.

“The Global Rallycross Series is a thrilling and relatively new form of racing that brings an entirely new demographic to the sport. We can’t wait to introduce the energy of one of these events to a new audience with Volkswagen Rallycross DC this June.”
