Andretti Autosport’s Marco Andretti laid down the fastest time at Indianapolis Motor Speedway to top the speed charts on the final practice day leading up to qualifying for the 96th running of the Indianapolis 500. Using his Chevrolet power, Andretti flew around the 2.5-mile oval at 39.553 for a speed of 227.540 mph.

Second and third fastest times were set by Team Penske’s Ryan Briscoe and Helio Castroneves.

It was not a surprise to see the IZOD IndyCar Series drivers power to the top of the charts on what was the seventh day of practice during the month of May. Briscoe’s best lap time came short by 0.123 seconds with a 39.676. Teammate Castroneves clocked a 39.697.

All of the drivers today had a bit of a boost due to the officials allowing an extra 10 kPa to their turbochargers. The extra horsepower (around 40) averages to four to five miles per hour per lap. They will be allowed to have the extra power during qualifying attempts.

“I thought we were at a bit of deficit to my teammates to start the month, but we just kept rubbing on it, we never gave up, and you know we kind of woke the car up and obviously with this added boost today it woke my car up, in particular, as well,” said Andretti.
