Dixon domination continues, but bizarre end to session

Scott Dixon’s final flying lap of Watkins Glen today broke the 146mph barrier and left his rivals gasping or suffering incidents in vain pursuit.

The Chip Ganassi Racing-Chevrolet’s driver’s 29th lap of 1min22.8740sec set a 146.391mph average on the 3.37-mile roadcourse, eclipsing Team Penske-Chevrolet’s top runners Helio Castroneves and Will Power by 0.15-0.2sec.

But the biggest stories came at the end of the session when both championship leader Simon Pagenaud and Tony Kanaan spun trying to improve their times on their final laps.

The Ganassi driver, who finished the session fourth fastest and 0.3sec adrift of Dixon, had a harmless spin in The Boot, not even making contact with the barrier until he tried to drive off unaided. But Pagenaud’s incident was a 140mph affair at Turn 7, the fast right-hander at the toe of The Boot.

The #22 appeared to get loose on entry, then grip up just as Pagenaud was on opposite lock, sending the car deep into the tire wall.

He was classified 11th, having focused on raceday setups for the majority of the session, and then being  blocked on one of his flying laps. Nonetheless, Juan Pablo Montoya made it three Penskes in the top five.

In what was a session largely dominated by Chevrolet, Jack Hawksworth gave the AJ Foyt Racing-Honda team a welcome fillip by clocking sixth fastest on 1min23.4463sec, just ahead of fellow Honda driver, Graham Rahal.

Josef Newgarden was eighth fastest for Ed Carpenter Racing-Chevrolet, despite stopping on track mid-session after picking up a left-rear puncture.

Andretti Autosport’s struggles continued, even aside from the generic Honda deficit, Alexander Rossi leading the way in 15th and Marco Andretti at the very bottom of the timesheets.

Conor Daly, who crashed this morning, completed 26 laps this afternoon and put three tenths of a second between himself and rookie teammate RC Enerson in the Dale Coyne Racing entries.
