Barcelona GP2: Lynn takes victory as Giovinazzi crashes hard

Williams tester Lynn headed home Red Bull junior Pierre Gasly, with Manor development driver Jordan King making up the podium.

Off the line, reverse-grid poleman Raffaele Marciello held the lead despite pressure from King, the Briton trying to take the lead round the outside of Turn 1 and then following the Italian close through Turn 2.

However, that compromised King's line and allowed Lynn to pounce on his compatriot for second place.

From that point on, Lynn quickly reeled in Marciello - and, once DRS was enabled, the DAMS driver eased into the race lead at Turn 1.

And that was the cue for Marciello to start sinking, with King breathing past the former Ferrari junior on the main straight next time by - and Gasly then picking up third place down the inside of Turn 3.

In no time, the Red Bull junior also made quick work of King after DRS was enabled. The Frenchman then rapidly took a second out of his former teammate Lynn's three-second lead, but then eased off, the duo maintaining status quo for a number of laps.

With 10 laps to go, Gasly started to close in on Lynn again, taking the gap to a second-and-a-half - but their battle was over before it had begun due to a massive crash further down the pack.

The catalyst was Campos Racing's Sean Gelael trying to squeeze Giovinazzi to the inside of Turn 10, the Indonesian's move resulting in a huge crash.

Giovinazzi was briefly airborne, heading into the corner at a high speed as he narrowly clipped the Rapax of Arthur Pic before bouncing up into the barriers.

The Italian managed to quickly get out of his demolished Dallara GP2/11, but the required clean-up and likely barrier repairs made it so that the race was seen out under safety car.

As such, it was Lynn's third win in GP2 - his maiden triumph having come, likewise, in the sprint race at this very track last year.

Gasly, who had lost the win to a late overtake on Saturday, brought the car home in second to take the points lead heading out of Barcelona.

King took third, ahead of Artem Markelov, who had passed teammate Marciello with the help of DRS midway through the race, with Oliver Rowland taking sixth after overtakes on Nicholas Latifi and Sergio Canamasas.

Canamasas was then also passed by Nobuharu Matsushita for the final points-paying position.

A very slow start ended Saturday winner's Norman Nato chances of adding points to his haul in the sprint race, the Frenchman ending up just 16th.
