Vettel, who was just edged out by teammate Kimi Raikkonen in second practice, said he still was not happy with the balance of the car.

"It's always our objective to go for pole, but I think it's only Friday, so I wouldn't stress too much," Vettel said.

"I think we had a decent day, the car feels okay for one lap. For the long run I didn't have the opportunity yet to see what the other people were doing.

"Overall, I think we can still improve. The balance is not yet there where I want it to be, so let's see what we can do.

"Friday is not that important in terms of position, it's more important in terms of feel. The feel was okay, but okay is not good, so I think we can still improve, especially the balance of the car. A lot of work tonight trying to get on top of everything."

Regarding Ferrari's tyre usage, he added: "I think that's something we can always improve. I think China is quite brutal on the tyres for everyone, you can see they were sliding a lot.

"Tyre degradation was quite high. One lap is good for qualy, but in the race ideally you want to have a lot of good laps in a row. That's our main focus."

Vettel said he was not concerned about being beaten by Raikkonen today.

"It's normal to compare, I was looking at some of his stuff. I think I saw where he was faster, it's easy to see when you know how to read the lines, not so easy to do.

"I think he got a better lap. I think we both had a different programme this afternoon, it's useful to compare one versus the other, and hopefully learn for the both of us."
