Do not dis-Turbo!
Tiago Monteiro and SEAT waiting for Valencia verdict
Tiago Monteiro and SEAT Sport are eagerly anticipating the fifth round of the World touring Car Championship (WTCC) that will take place this weekend on the Valencia circuit in Spain. After the modifications made to the regulations that prevented the team and its five drivers from being competitive in Pau, the Portuguese racer is opting not to make any predictions ahead of the event.
The FIA changed the rules after the French round of the calendar stating that the maximum engine speed will be limited to 4200 rpm from now on. Over revving while downshifting, wheel-spinning and jumping the kerbs will not be taken into account. In addition, the limit of the turbo pressure has been raised to 2.7 bar. Over boost pressure spikes above this limit, mainly due to instability phenomena like gear shifting, which lasts less than one second, will be allowed. It was this particular limit that caused the FIA to penalize the Leon TDI no.5 in Morocco.
Because of this Tiago believes that it is too early to gauge the team's competitiveness in the coming races... "We are at a critical phase when a lot of rule changes have been decided and it is therefore impossible to define our aim for Valencia: points, podium or a win? We surely did not like the fact that we had to take to the track with absolutely no chance of being competitive or to make the car faster and I want to hope that this will be different in Valencia. The championship would suffer if a team that has worked really hard to get to the top would all of a sudden be condemned to the back of the grid. Last year, Valencia track did not really suit our Leon TDI and it was really nice to the Chevrolet. Things could change this year but it is too risky to make any predictions. Our team is motivated to defend both its drivers and manufacturers titles and we will fight with all the tools we have at our disposal," guaranteed Tiago.
The SEAT Leon TDI will have 20kg of ballast in Valencia. SEAT Sport heads into this round, their sixth visit to the Valencia circuit, leading both the team and drivers classifications. Meanwhile, weather forecasters have predicted that it will be a little overcast and the possibility of rain on Sunday while the maximum temperature should reach 25o.C.
The 5th stage of the WTCC can be followed on Eurosport with qualifying taking place on Saturday May 30 at 4:30PM and the races on Sunday May 31 at 11:45AM and 1:15PM UK Time.
