On to the title!
Tiago Monteiro was one of the main participants in the official presentation of this season's SEAT Sport team in the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) on Wednesday, February 20th. The Madrid's La Zarzuela de Madrid hippodrome was the stage for the official launch of the project and the presentation of the team's objectives.
Tiago will be one of the five SEAT Sport drivers to line up in the championship with the ambition of winning the world title. The path is laid out for them: a team effort where the combination of talents, five official cars and a structure of the highest caliber are the weapons needed to win races, and to reach the final objective, the world title. The Portuguese driver remembers that the coming championship will be one of the most competitive there is, and is meeting the challenge with enthusiasm. "We are five competitive drivers with different characteristics and we know each other well. We know that we need to make an unwavering team effort to enable SEAT Sport to go off in conquest of the constructors' title; which calls for a collective effort in the service of SEAT Sport," Tiago Monteiro declared. "Our strategy will be essential and just making it a reality represents a challenge in itself. From a personal point of view, it will be my first time driving a car with a diesel engine in competition. All the signs that it gave us in the tests are encouraging and I can't wait to begin the championship in Curitiba, an event I missed last year and so for which I don't have any references."
Jordi Gene, Yvan Muller, Ryckard Rydell, and Gabriele Tarquini will be Tiago Monteiro's teammates with SEAT Sport. After a 2007 season that saw the team miss the title by a hair, Jaime Puig, the SEAT Sport Director acted as spokesperson for the confidence demonstrated by the entire team: "Our objective is to be Number 1 this year. We came close to bringing home the title last year and we know that we have all the abilities needed to make it this year."
In the crowd of the official presentation Jaime Puig and Isabel Videira, SEAT Sport communications director, saved an emotional moment for the 200 European journalists present by explaining to them that the new generation of SEAT Sport's drivers is already here, presenting them with a picture of Tiago's new daughter, who turns one week old on Wednesday. The Portuguese driver was particularly moved to be given a miniature helmet with his daughter's name on it. A symbolic moment that reflects the team spirit that reigns within SEAT Sport.
Tiago and SEAT Sport will soon pack their bags for Curitiba, where the first two races of the 2008 FIA WTCC championship will be held March 1 and 2.
