Stunning recover of Coronel in Sonoma
24/09/2012- The round of Sonoma (USA), ninth round of the FIA WTCC 2012 witnessed a stunning performance by Tom Coronel.
The Dutch driver, only twentieth in qualifying due to an error in the final and decisive attempt in Q1, produced an unhoped-for recover that made him climb all the way up to the eighth final place. Coronel's race two has been even nicer as he gained position over position up to the final fifth place, just a few seconds off the winner Robert Huff (Chevrolet).
Less luck for Alberto Cerqui instead: the young Italian got into Q2 in qualifying where he set the eleventh time but in race one he has been involved in an incident that forced him to an early retirement. The damage on his BMW 320TC made him take part in the second race with a technical problem, nevertheless Cerqui defended himself well and ended thirteenth.
Coronel is currently fifth in classification with 164 points, 29 shy of the fourth place. In theYokohama Drivers' Trophy Cerqui is seventh instead at 51, just one shy of the sixth place. In the Yokohama Teams' Trophy ROAL Motorsport keeps the lead with 136 points, that is13 clear of Tuenti Racing Team.
Roberto Ravaglia (ROAL Motorsport, Team Principal): "Coronel run one of his nicest races of the last few years, reacting in the best possible way to a bad qualifying. What a shame for Cerqui: in the little time in-between the two races it was not possible to fix the car and in the second race he could not have done any better".
