First test at Portimao for Zanardi and Hernandez
The 2009 season of FIA WTCC will officially start next 8th March at Curitiba (Brazil). The assembly work of the two BMW 320si that will race throughout the season continues unceasingly at ROAL Motorsport's headquarters in Padua from which, in a little more than a month time, the container will leave to South America.
One of the biggest news is the new driver's formation: the Spaniard Sergio Hernandez, 25 years old, will drive the car with BMW Spain livery that has been driven by Felix Porteiro in the last couple of years. Alex Zanardi has been confirmed and he will keep on driving, since the end of 2003, the BMW 320si supported by BMW Italy.
Roberto Ravaglia (Team Principal):
'We start the 2009 with the usual enthusiasm and determination and we will be on track on Thursday 15th January at Portimao in Portugal for three testing days.
It is reasonable to expect that new regulations will make WTCC even more interesting from a sportive viewpoint by reducing the difference between petrol engines and diesel ones. I am pretty confident on the competitiveness of our BMW 320si and of our drivers.
Zanardi is about to start his sixth complete season with BMW Team Italy-Spain and he is a precious reference point for the whole team. The arrival of Sergio Hernandez, winner of the Independents Trophy in 2008, gives us further motivations: he proved to be fast and I am certain that he will feel comfortable with the role of official driver too.'
