Hong Kong - Some steady performance on the Marrakech Street Circuit saw Darryl O’Young completed both races in class fifth and fourth in the World Touring Car Championship in Morocco.

He took home nine valuable points as well moving up a place to fourth in the Yokohama Drivers’ Trophy standings, whilst scoring his first World Championship points of the season.

Hampered by a crash with ROAL Motorsport teammate Tom Coronel during Saturday’s qualifying, O’Young started from overall P13 in both races. The 33-year-old finished with an independent P5 and overall P12 in an uneventful opening race in Morocco.

The Hong Kong’s top car racer then had a good start in the second round, moving up to as high as overall P8, before taking the chequered flag as the fourth fastest car in the independent class.

“On the final lap of the race after a safety car period, I made a mistake under braking and was overtaken by Franz Engstler, dropping me down to P9 overall and P4 Independent,” said Darryl, who was also the top three BMWs on the track for both races.

The results meant O’Young has now scored points in each of the first four rounds in his two WTCC outings this season, the first time he has done so since his debut season back in 2010.

WTCC will now take a three-week break before all teams and drivers travel to Slovakia for the third race on the calendar year. Darryl finished with an overall P7 & P9 on the Slovakia Ring in two races last year.

Qualifying 1 at Marrakech – Independent P5 & Overall P13

“It was a very disappointing qualifying as my car had the potential to make it into Q2. Unfortunately my teammate Tom Coronel made a mistake under braking and hit me off into the wall.”

Race 1 at Marrakech (2013 round 3) – Independent P5 & Overall P12

“The BMW is known not to have the best top speed so on a circuit like Marrakech with long straights, we could only hope for other drivers to make mistakes.”

Race 2 at Marrakech (2013 round 4) – Independent P4 & Overall P9

“I had a 5 lap battle with Race 1 winner Michel Nykjaer, but at the end, I couldn’t hold off the power of the Chevrolet.”
