2005 FIA WTCC Presented In Monza

The 2005 FIA World Touring Car Championship was launched yesterday, during a crowded press conference in Monza. More than 200 journalists, photographers and TV crew members coming from twenty different countries attended the event, together with as many guests, including the Manufacturers' representatives and drivers.

The press conference took place in the media centre, during a break between the different sessions of the official testing.

An unexpected guest joined the attendance at the last minute: Lapo Elkann, manager of FIAT Auto brand promotion. After the presse conference was over he also enjoyed a ride in one of the Alfa Romeo 156 racing cars driven by Augusto Farfus.

Augusto Farfus emerged as the fastest driver over the two days of the FIA WTCC official testing in Monza. Alfa Romeo's Brazilian youngster set the fastest lap at 1:58.783, the only driver to go under the 1:59. mark. Second fastest was his team mate Gabriele Tarquini, while Dirk Muller set the third fastest time, the best of the BMW cars.

Roberto Colciago's JAS Motorsport Honda Civic (8th fastest), and Jordi Gene's SEAT Toledo Cupra (10th fastest) were the only cars to break the Alfa Romeo-BMW front in the the top ten.

New comers Ford and Chevrolet still have to work to close tha gap, while the SEAT cars did not confirm their performances they had in the recent testing in Magny-Cours and Silverstone.

32 drivers took part in the test at the wheel of 29 different cars.
