UNLUCKY START FOR JAS IN THE WTCC
The first round of the World Touring Car Championship 2005 took place on the last week end in Monza (April 9-10). An impressive number of 34 FIA Super 2000 cars were present, representing 6 manufacturers.
The final results were very disappointing for JAS drivers Roberto Colciago and Adriano 'Ado' De Micheli who suffered various technical problems during the week end.
In qualifying Roberto Colciago (14th) could have claimed an impressive 8th position but his time was deleted for having cut a chicane. "I am very disappointed" Roberto commented "we are not in the position on the grid where we could have been, and I have been penalised for something that many other drivers have done without any penalty".
The races did not bring any good luck to Roberto, who was 12th in race 1 and spun in race 2 at the second of Lesmo while fighting for the 8th position, just behind the leading cars.
"Here in Monza the handling of my car was very good, we just missed some speed on the straight line, that obviously is a big penalty in Monza. I tried to push as much as could to compensate for that, but I evidently went beyond the limit of the car"
Adriano De Micheli, the driver from Scuderia Niosi (USA), was only 30th in qualifying, 21st in race 1 and 14th in race 2 (3rd of the drivers having the entry for the new born Italian Championship). "During the warm up in the morning the track was damp and I had a serious accident with Rosenblad, which was my mistake. Therefore in race 1 I took it easy at the first corner, as I really wanted to finish both races this week end to grow experience with my car, which is actually what I miss at the moment, especially in qualifying. However I am very confident for the season: we started this program late, and it is not easy to exploit the full potential of this car which I believe to be very high".
"The result in Monza is quite below our expectations and our ambitions" comments team principal Alessandro Mariani "Although there are 17 works cars on the grid we do believe that we can fight for the first 10 positions, and the recent test in Monza have proved that our Team has the right cars and the right drivers to aim at very ambitious targets. This week-end we have suffered problems of youth which are quite common in the beginning of the season for a team which had not so much opportunities to test during the winter time"
In Monza another JAS-made Accord was present, that of Tomas Engstrom, who claimed an interesting P14 in race 1 (P2 Indipendent) while scoring the Best Lap time of the Indipendents. " I am quite pleased of this week-end" Tomas commented "my first priority was to grow experience with the car in view of the STCC season, which is my real objective this year. I could have fought to win the Indipendent race 2, but I was pushed at the start of the race and my exhaust was badly damaged".
The next round of the WTCC 2005 will take place in Magny Cours, April,30 -- May,1
