COLCIAGO SHINES IN IMOLA AND SCORES FIRST WTCC POINTS
The 4th WTCC event in Imola waves the impressive result of Roberto Colciago, who claimed an impressive 6th position in Race 1 at the wheel of his JAS-made Honda Accord Euro R and scored the first points in the WTCC 2005.
Roberto started the Race in 6th position and fought hardly against the works Alfa Romeo and Seat to defend his position. Unfortunately a race collision with Gene produced the reaction of the stewards who, at the end of race 2, penalised the italian driver by 10 positions on the grid of the next race in Puebla (Mexico).
In race 2 Roberto started from the 3rd position on the grid and set the 2nd best lap time of the race before a technical failure stopped him while he was fighting for the 7th position.
"I am happy and sad at the same time: the car was very competitive, and I could have been 3rd in qualifying if I did not find trafic during my last attempt" Roberto says. "The 6th position in race 1 is quite satisfactory but we could even do better, with a bit more of luck". Regarding the accident with Gene: "It was a clear passing for me and Gene could have avoided contact if he had wanted to. Instead he went straight on, we made contact and I was punished. Penalty decisions are very inconsistent and nobody knows what is and isn't allowed"
Adriano 'Ado' De Micheli, from Scuderia Niosi (U.S.A.), finally smiled after a successful qualifying session when he claimed the 12th position, only 7/100" seconds from Colciago. "I keep learning more and more the car, and finally I could express my potential in a circuit which is more familiar to me" Ado said "Unfortunately at the start of race 1 I was just behind the big collision at the Tamburello corner, I have avoided problems by driving through a cloud of dust and I thought I made it, but I hit a pile of tyres which have damaged the cooling system, and the race was just finished for me. That was frustrating, but finally I proved that I can fight in the top ten".
"We have worked hard to develop the car" Team Principal Alessandro Mariani goes, "and the performance in Imola proved that we can fulfill our ambition to fight at the same level with the works teams. However we are persecuted by the misfortune, Colciago was stopped in race 2 due to a failure of a little component of the oil cooling system, possible consequence of the fight in race 1, and De Micheli could have fought for the points as well if he was not involved in the accident. The penalty for Colciago is definitely too much for us, neither Roberto nor JAS deserved such a heavy penalty that will make our next round in Puebla extremely tough"
