The opening weekend of the FIA WTCC 2009 in Brazil concluded for BMW Team Italy-Spain with the first three points of the season obtained in race one by Sergio Hernandez. Tenth place for Alex Zanardi, only BMW driver employing the sequential gearbox that involves 30kg of additional ballast by rule.
Heavy showers on the track right before the start compromised the result of race two. On the wet tarmac, historically unfavourable for rear wheeled cars, Hernandez concluded tenth after a good race spoiled by a contact with Porteiro. Zanardi finished under the chequered flag as well, in fourteenth position.
Roberto Ravaglia (Team Principal):
"I am extremely satisfied by Hernandez' performance: in care one he has been really determined and he obtained the fastest lap of the race at the third last lap. In race two, rain did not play in our favour but he defended well himself, what a shame for the contact originated by Porteiro that prevented him to score some more points. Zanardi suffered more than what is normal the 30kg ballast imposed by rule for the usage of sequential gearbox. This is due to the physiological power loss of engines at high altitudes: unfortunately the disadvantage in the weight/power ratio badly influenced the outcome of his weekend."
